Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps are commonly used in transfer applications and can handle a wide range of feeds such as sludge, slurries, abrasive, and shear sensitive fluids. They are robust, reliable, and simple to maintain, but they are noisy, prone to icing, and limited to low-pressure applications. The most common type of pump used in the chemical industry is the Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pump (AODD), also known as the Pneumatic Operated Diaphragm Pump. Positive displacement pumps, often known as AODD pumps or pneumatic pumps, are a form of AODD pumps. Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps are powered by compressed air rather than electricity, allowing them to safely transfer and pump potentially hazardous, flammable, or corrosive fluids. Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps have two chambers, each with its intake check valve, output check valve, and diaphragm, which is why they’re also called double diaphragm pumps. The air supply is switched from one chamber to the other by moving back and forth. Fluid is driven out when the diaphragm returns to the opposite chamber, and the other chamber begins to fill. The fluid is ejected out when the diaphragm moves back into the opposite chamber. The pumping action is created by this motion.
